"Advertising and product photography are often seen as one of the most complex areas of professional photography"
Insightful words by Karl Taylor, one of the world's leading product photographers, a man to whom I am eternally grateful to for teaching me his art.
There is a lot more to today's shot of a balancing egg than what meets the eye. I wanted a perfectly symmetrical image in which its reflection is an integral part.
Apart from applying
creative lighting to achieve that critical balance, I also wanted to capture some of the fine organic detail in the shell.
So I introduced some side light with a tight grid and was able to highlight the texture in the eggshell with shadows in the craters. Unfortunately not clearly visible in this low resolution image.
The dark side was not lighted at all but is a reflection in the shell of a white card in the distance.
Then I added some low powered front light to create the very thin highlights along the leading edges of the forks. These were sufficient to be seen also in the reflection below.
I pride myself to get realistic looking results straight out of camera and this shot was no exception.
